Ear Wax

It is healthy to have a small amount of ear wax present in your ears; it cleans, moisturises and protects your ear canal and outer ear by trapping substances such as dirt and skin.  Most individuals do not need to ‘clean’ their ears of wax, however some people can experience excessive ear wax which can be problematic, causing:

  • Hearing problems

  • Dizziness

  • Discomfort (and in some instances pain)

  • Tinnitus

  • Itching

  • A feeling of fullness

  • Hearing aids to malfunction

In these instances, an individual may wish to have their ear wax removed by a professional.

What is Microsuction?

At Bath Hearing Services, rather than irrigating the ear canal with warm water to remove the wax, we use a thin, sterile, metal tube to gently suction the ear wax out of the ear canal.

The upmost care and attention is given and the clinician will wear a head loupe to provide powerful magnification to the ear, this ensures the area being treated is clearly visible.

A specula or tumarkin is used to help guide the suction tube to safely remove the ear wax and help to protect the ear canal. In some cases it may be appropriate to use an additional tool such as a probe or crocodile forceps to remove wax.
